How has attending an HBCU set you up for success?
Attending an HBCU has set me up for success by exposing me to opportunities I never knew existed. At Howard, we receive quality education, hands-on training, and invaluable networking experiences that empower us to thrive in our careers. The culture of Black excellence is unmatched. It fuels ambition, fosters confidence, and inspires me to bring my best to everything I do. Beyond academics, it provides a powerful foundation, equipping me with the skills, resources, and knowledge to stand out and drive meaningful change in the world.
What inspired you to apply for the "Celebrating Fashion Future" program?
Growing up, I was surrounded by quality, chic fashion, and Steve Madden products were a staple in my household, inspiring me to apply for this program. The opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals in fashion, retail, and business excited me, as did the chance to leverage Shopify’s expertise in e-commerce strategies to launch and scale my own business in the future. I was also eager to immerse myself in a creative space, collaborating with like-minded students to exchange ideas and empower each other toward success.
What drives you? Share your passions, values, or a defining experience that shaped who you are today.
I am driven by the sacrifices my family made to give me the opportunities I have today, especially in education and life. In our household, hard work, dedication, and excellence were core values, and my parents and siblings exemplified them in everything they did. I was taught never to settle for less than I deserved, which meant embracing continuous learning, having faith in God, and always giving my best. Their guidance instilled strong morals in me and reinforced the importance of trusting God in every aspect of my journey.
How do you see yourself as part of Fashion's future? What unique perspective or contribution will you bring to the industry?
I see myself as part of fashion’s future by bringing creativity and innovation through my use of textures, styles, and prints. Growing up surrounded by Afrocentric and traditional patterns, I developed a deep appreciation for their beauty and craftsmanship. As someone who also creates these designs, I believe fashion should be limitless. I aim to break boundaries by incorporating these vibrant elements into my personal style and pushing for their wider acceptance in mainstream media, especially within Western fashion. I want to challenge conventional norms and inspire a more inclusive and diverse fashion landscape.
What excites you about the intersection of entrepreneurship and corporate careers, and how do you see yourself navigating both worlds?
What excites me about the intersection of entrepreneurship and corporate careers is the potential to harness the best of both worlds. By balancing these two paths, I can fuel my passion for entrepreneurship while benefiting from the growth opportunities that come with a corporate career. The ability to have multiple streams of income, with one grounded in my own business and the other in a corporate setting, is incredibly motivating. I see myself exploring both careers, ensuring they complement each other while allowing me to thrive and enjoy the journey.
How has this program helped you grow personally and what's one insight you're taking with you for the future?
This program has instilled in me the importance of knowledge and teamwork in achieving a common goal. It has pushed me to introspect and better understand where my true passions lie, all while being supported by an encouraging community. Through the capstone project, I’ve learned to collaborate with talented, creative individuals who inspire me to think outside the box and push my limits. This experience has greatly shaped my growth and critical thinking, and it’s something I will carry with me moving forward.
How does your campus Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) create community and opportunity for students?
I was drawn to join BRAG not only because of the incredible opportunities it offers but also because of the welcoming, exciting community it has. Whether through activities or meetings, it’s a space where we can truly express ourselves and ideas, regardless of our backgrounds. Everyone is eager to help each other grow, and being a part of this has been a great experience. BRAG also provides students with the chance to be themselves while offering numerous career and personal development opportunities to refine our skills.
