My name is Olivia Washington and I am a graduating senior marketing major at the illustrious Howard University. For as long as I can remember I have been an artist. It started with painting and sketching, but quickly transitioned into a love for sneakers, fashion, textiles, colors, you name it. Since entering college I have continued to sew and design for my prospective brand, however, I have also pursued my passion professionally while interning at Loewe and also pursuing my current part-time job at a local high end boutique. My end goal is to preside as creative director/head designer for my own brand, while also building my mentorship program.

How has attending an HBCU set you up for success?
Attending an HBCU has set me up for success by providing me with a nurturing environment to promote my personal and professional growth. I have the privilege of being around people who look like me, care about community, and often have similar goals and interests as me. Finding community at my HBCU has been easy for me, whether its professional, social, or creative. The environment has been so conducive to my growth, confidence, and persistence.
How are you looking to contribute to the professional world upon graduation?
I look forward to entering the fashion industry and bringing new ideas to a company's vision, but also ethos. My undergraduate experiences have taught me that the best teams come from a shared vision, but also openness and collaboration. I want to join resource groups within the company and encourage collaboration and continuous learning in any way I can, especially leadership. Furthermore, I have various marketing and design-related ideas. Finding ways to generate innovation within the fashion and design of the company I work for is something I am definitely looking to contribute upon graduation.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would either be a creative director of either my own clothing brand, or a brand that I really love. I’ve always wanted this position because it combines my interest in design, business, and fashion, as well as working on a team to collaborate.
How do you express your personal sense of style through fashion?
I express my personal style through a few interrelated methods. Dressing “high and low” is one of my favorites. I find my favorite stand-out pieces, like statement frames and shoes, then style them with something understated such as a solid top and bottom. Similarly, I always aim to wear something I’m comfortable with interesting silhouettes.
What role will you play in the future of fashion?
As part of my clothing brand I also plan to donate funds to either a scholarship, grant, or mentorship program for young designers of color. As someone trying to find my way in the industry, it can be difficult to make connections and find mentorship, especially from people who are from where I’m from, look how I look, etc. I want to create a safe space and resourceful program for young fashion entrepreneurs to flourish and perfect their craft.
