Destiny Dowdell

Business Management

Year: Junior

I am currently a third-year business management major at Howard University. I hope to one day become an entrepreneur, opening my own business with the purpose of highlighting diversity and inclusivity in the dance industry. I’m looking to obtain an internship during my time here at Howard that increases my work experience and networking abilities. I have great experience in leadership roles, coming up with creative solutions for business problems, and working with teams.

How has attending an HBCU set you up for success?

Attending an HBCU has equipped me with the tools necessary to embark on my journey as a young, black, and female entrepreneur in a corporate world that is male dominated. I have learned more about the business world and how to be a professional, while never selling myself short or feeling uncomfortable being one of none.

How are you looking to contribute to the professional world upon graduation?

Upon graduation I plan to work towards opening multiple businesses in the dance industry focusing on diversity and inclusion.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is building a safe haven for young dancers. A place where everyone feels included. Where they can go to train and know that I will have ALL of their best interests at heart.

How do you express your personal sense of style through fashion?

I like to dress based on how I feel...I don't lean towards one aesthetic, I like to try new things, but always keep it fit to me and who I am as a person on the inside and out. I love clothes and shoes and I love how much a ""fit"" can say about a person.

What role will you play in the future of fashion?

I want to be a catalyst for change in the world of dance fashion. I want to make shoes and clothing that is fit for the dancer that wears it. Tights and shoes are supposed to be "flesh colored," yet the only color that is readily available is a light pink that only caters to dancers of a lighter skin tone. I want to launch a dance wear line that caters to dancers of various skin tones and sizes.
