My name is Janiya Lamisere. I am a senior psychology major and electronic studio arts minor from Atlanta, Georgia. I am a multifaceted artist and entrepreneur, passionate about mental health and the expression of the arts within the Black community. I intend to use my psychology knowledge and artistic skills to have a positive impact in the business of fashion and the Black community.
How has attending an HBCU set you up for success?
Attending an HBCU has showed me not to approach my being and my career path, especially my creativity in a monolithic way. When you’re surrounded by so many diverse, talented and like-minded individuals, it can be easy to get sunken in it. however, it pushes you to do better for yourself and find a approach to life that works for you. It allows you to be uncomfortable and grow. It allows you to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds and sit in those uncomfortable spaces. It allows you to create a legacy for yourself how you see fit.
How are you looking to contribute to the professional world upon graduation?
In the profession world, I plan on being a voice and advocate for women like me who are multi-faceted and want to make their impact in the professional world in different ways. I also want to show the benefits of being a psychology major in non-adjacent spaces.
What is your dream job?
I want to be a voice and advocate for Black girls like me who don’t want to and be confined to doing just one thing and being just one way. I want to take my background and diverse skills and apply it where I see fit while staying authentic to myself.
How do you express your personal sense of style through fashion?
My personal style is one of one. I don't like to confine myself to one aesthetic because I rather wear what I like because I like it.
What role will you play in the future of fashion?
I bring a diverse perspective to things. I am an artist, I'm an entrepreneur, I am a psychology student, and I want to bring them all together to be a force in the fashion industry.
