What inspired you to apply for the "Celebrating Fashion Future" program?
As a HU BRAG representative and Vice President, I was inspired by the “Celebrating Fashion’s Future” program because I saw a brand like Steve Madden genuinely invest in students, especially students of color. Growing up, I rarely saw opportunities like this, particularly in environments where careers in fashion were uncommon, so the program felt intentional and impactful. I was drawn to learning how fashion moves from idea to execution and hearing directly from industry professionals. Most of all, I was inspired by the program’s collaborative, creative environment, where students share ideas, learn from one another, and grow together.
What drives you? Share your passions, values, or a defining experience that shaped who you are today.
I am driven by a deep desire to be unique, solve real-world problems through creative and sustainable approaches, and bring something meaningful and original into the world. While I am still discovering the specific problem I want to solve, I know my purpose is rooted in fashion and visual storytelling and their power to create positive change. My faith grounds me, and Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28 remind me that my journey has purpose and that all experiences work for my good. I value kindness, impact, and legacy, and I am motivated to uplift the next generation.
How do you see yourself as part of Fashion's future? What unique perspective or contribution will you bring to the industry? If you do not plan to work in Fashion, share how your will continue to celebrate your personal style in whatever you go.
I see myself as part of fashion’s future by bringing creativity and innovation through my use of textures, styles, and prints. Growing up surrounded by Afrocentric and traditional patterns, I developed a deep appreciation for their beauty and craftsmanship. As someone who also creates these designs, I believe fashion should be limitless. I aim to break boundaries by incorporating these vibrant elements into my personal style and pushing for their wider acceptance in mainstream media, especially within Western fashion. I want to challenge conventional norms and inspire a more inclusive and diverse fashion landscape.
How does your campus Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) create community and opportunity for students?
This past year, serving as Vice President of Howard’s BRAG has shown me how powerful community can be. Our E board is very intentional about creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow. Through creative collaborative events, general body meetings, and social media engagement, we connect members to opportunities in fashion and retail while also encouraging self-expression and confidence. Howard BRAG is welcoming and uplifting, a space where students from all backgrounds can share ideas freely and support one another’s journeys. Being part of this community has been both grounding and rewarding.
